Sulphur, Louisiana - Residents in Sulphur are now under a boil advisory after a previously reported water main break caused pressure in the city's water system to drop below state-required levels. The affected locations include the area from North Beglis Parkway to Kim Street and O’Quain Drive to Interstate 10, according to city officials. The advisory remains in effect while crews continue repairs and the water system undergoes testing to confirm its safety.
A significant water main break occurred leading to service disruptions and widespread reports of low or no water pressure throughout the area. While repairs are ongoing and some water service has been restored, the City of Sulphur is maintaining the boil advisory as a precaution to protect public health. Loss of water pressure in a municipal system can allow contaminants to enter the distribution network, which is why such advisories are put in place.
Residents in the impacted zones should take the following steps before consuming tap water:
- Run household faucets until water runs clear, flushing any potential contaminants or sediment from pipes.
- Boil all water intended for drinking, food preparation, washing dishes, or brushing teeth for at least one full minute after it reaches a rolling boil in a clean container.
- If the boiled water has a flat taste, this can be improved by shaking it in a clean bottle, pouring it between clean containers, or adding a small pinch of salt to each quart of water.
City spokespersons clarify that these precautions will remain necessary until the Louisiana State Laboratory confirms the water is safe, at which point the advisory will be lifted and residents notified.
