SULPHUR, La. — The intersection of Maplewood Drive and Hazel Street in Sulphur is now operating as a four-way stop beginning Dec. 11, and will remain that way for the duration of the ongoing Maplewood Drive Rehabilitation Phase 3 Project.

During this period, the traffic signals at the intersection will flash red in all directions, and temporary stop signs will be placed at each approach. Drivers are required to come to a complete stop and proceed only when it is safe and their turn to do so.
The traffic change is part of the broader Maplewood Drive Rehabilitation Phase 3 Project, which is aimed at improving the roadway and related infrastructure in the area. Converting a signalized intersection to a four-way stop is a common temporary measure used to keep traffic moving while construction affects normal signal operation or lane layouts.
Motorists traveling through the Maplewood Drive and Hazel Street intersection are urged to follow all posted signage, obey the flashing red lights, and drive with caution. Four-way stops can cause confusion for drivers who are used to a regular traffic signal, especially during the first days of a change, so transportation officials often stress the importance of slowing down, paying attention, and avoiding distractions.
Drivers are reminded to keep extra distance between vehicles, watch for workers and equipment, and be prepared for sudden stops or traffic shifts in the project area.
