SULPHUR, LA – The Sulphur Fire Department has announced that it will conduct its annual testing and inspection of the city’s fire hydrants throughout the month of March. This essential procedure aims to maintain the Fire Department’s Class 2 fire rating and ensure that all hydrants are functioning efficiently for effective fire protection.

During this testing period, residents may notice discolored tap water as fire department personnel flush the hydrants. This discoloration is a normal result of the flushing process and is not a cause for concern. The Fire Department stated that residents should run their water until it becomes clear before using it for drinking or washing clothes. Typically, the discoloration will clear within five minutes, but if it persists, residents are advised to wait an hour before trying again.

In addition to maintaining the fire rating, the hydrant testing plays a crucial role in monitoring the health of the city’s water system. The process helps to identify weak areas within the system, stirs up materials that may have settled in the hydrants, and cleans out the water lines. These measures are vital for ensuring that the city’s fire protection measures are robust and effective.
