Sulphur, Louisiana - Four people sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate when a fire erupted at the Citgo Lake Charles Refinery in Sulphur on Monday afternoon, according to Louisiana State Police.

The incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. at the facility located on LA 108, prompting an immediate emergency response. Louisiana State Police confirmed that all four injured individuals received medical attention for their injuries, though specific details about their conditions were not immediately available.

The Citgo Lake Charles Refinery is a major petroleum processing facility located in Sulphur, Louisiana, that plays a significant role in the region's energy infrastructure. Refineries like this one process crude oil into various petroleum products, including gasoline, diesel fuel, and other chemicals used in everyday products.

Louisiana State Police HazMat teams responded to the scene to assess potential environmental and safety concerns. HazMat units specialize in handling hazardous materials and substances that could pose risks to public health or the environment.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Refinery fires, while not common, can pose serious risks due to the volatile nature of petroleum products and chemicals stored at such facilities. The quick response from emergency personnel appears to have limited the scope of injuries in this case.

The Sulphur area, located in Calcasieu Parish, hosts several industrial facilities that form the backbone of Louisiana's petrochemical industry.

No information has been released regarding potential impacts on refinery operations or whether the facility has resumed normal activities following the fire.
