Sulphur, Louisiana – The Henning Cultural Center is set to host a special gallery talk and reception on Saturday, September 7th, at 12 pm, featuring the work of renowned artist Alma Carerra. The event is part of the INARda ART SHOW, a celebration of Carerra’s artistic journey and her contributions to the arts communities in Puerto Rico and Louisiana.
Born in the Bronx, New York, to Puerto Rican parents, Carerra’s artistic talents were nurtured from an early age by her father, a writer and visual artist, and her mother, a skilled seamstress. At the age of three, she moved to Puerto Rico, where she spent 54 years developing her craft and honing her skills under the guidance of her family’s creative influence.
Carerra is a certified artisan by the Office of Artisan Development of Puerto Rico (PRIDCO) with over 34 years of experience in various mediums, including painting, tile mosaics, needlework, wire sculptures, and carnival masks. She has also taught workshops, designed creative resources, and supported community empowerment through art. Currently, she is based in Westlake, Louisiana, and serves as an art instructor for the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury.
The art show, which will be on display from August 26th to September 14th, offers a unique opportunity to experience Carerra’s work in person and support her artistic career. The exhibit will feature a blend of her cultural heritage and personal expression, showcasing her signature style that has made her a beloved figure in both Puerto Rican and Louisiana arts communities.
The event is brought to you by the Brimstone Historical Society and Sulphur Parks & Recreation in partnership with INARda ART. Admission is free, and refreshments will be served. Artwork will be available for purchase, providing a chance for attendees to take a piece of Carerra’s creativity home with them.
