Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana — The National Weather Service in Lake Charles issued a special weather statement Wednesday afternoon, until at least 2:45 pm, alerting residents of Calcasieu Parish and neighboring areas about a cluster of strong thunderstorms. The storms, tracked by Doppler radar near Sabine National Wildlife Refuge, are moving northeast at approximately 30 mph and are expected to impact communities across Southwest Louisiana and Southeast Texas.
Hazards and Impacts
According to the statement, the primary hazards associated with these storms include wind gusts up to 40 mph and hail about the size of peas. Meteorologists note that such wind speeds can knock down tree limbs and dislodge unsecured outdoor objects. Minor damage to vegetation and property is possible.
In addition to wind and hail, torrential rainfall is accompanying this weather system. Heavy downpours can quickly lead to localized flooding, particularly in low-lying or poorly drained areas. The National Weather Service advises motorists not to drive through flooded roadways, as even shallow water can be dangerous and may conceal hazards such as washed-out pavement.
Lightning Threats
Frequent cloud-to-ground lightning is also occurring with these storms. Experts remind the public that lightning can strike as far as 10 miles from the core of a thunderstorm, posing a risk even if skies appear clear overhead. Residents are encouraged to seek safe shelter inside buildings.
Preparedness and Safety Tips
Officials recommend that anyone outdoors should move indoors when storms approach. Securing loose items around homes and businesses can help prevent property damage. For those caught driving during heavy rain, it is safest to pull over in a safe location until visibility improves.
