Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana – With winter weather on the horizon, authorities in Calcasieu Parish are urging residents to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary. Ice, snow, and freezing temperatures are forecasted to impact the region, making driving conditions hazardous. Local authorities emphasize that the best course of action is to remain at home, as emergency vehicles require clear roads to respond quickly to incidents.

For those who must travel, the following safety tips are essential. First, drivers should take it slow, as skidding can occur easily on icy surfaces. Bridges and overpasses are particularly treacherous, often resembling ice rinks due to their exposure to cold air from above and below. It is crucial to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead, as tailgating can lead to disastrous outcomes on slick roads. Additionally, turning on headlights is recommended to enhance visibility; being seen is vital when navigating winter weather.

In preparation for these conditions, the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury Public Works crews are actively sanding bridges throughout the area. This proactive measure aims to increase traction and minimize the risk of crashes. Similarly, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) has announced that crews are pretreating roadways across the state to combat the anticipated icy conditions. Crews from Arkansas with spreaders and snow plows have also been brought into Southwest Louisiana to assist Louisiana DOTD and Parish crews.

Authorities are appealing to the public to exercise caution while driving and to provide ample space for road crews as they work diligently to ensure safety on the roads. By following these guidelines and remaining vigilant, residents can help to mitigate the risks associated with winter weather.
