The story of the Maplewood & Beglis Flip Flop became popular mainly due to several comedic posts in the Southwest Louisiana Information Station Facebook group.
What appears to be the first post about the Sulphur Flip Flop was by local resident Heather G. and read:
"I know that I cant be the only one who has noticed this lone flip flop that's been chilling at Beglis and Maplewood for the past TWO AND A HALF WEEKS. It isn't important, and really stupid, but I think it's hilarious. It's been there long enough in the same exact spot that my son says, "Here comes the flip flop!"
???"
This was followed by multiple other posts on social media joking about sightings of the locally famous footwear. There were also a few folks who seemed slightly unhappy with the number of posts being made about the Maplewood & Beglis Flip Flop which prompted one of the admins to create a poll asking if members wanted to keep following the Sulphur flip flop or not. At the time this was published, the poll had been up for two days and the results were 442 for following, with only 142 votes to stop following the Maplewood & Beglis Flip Flop.
Whether you find it funny or otherwise, it's still clever of the museum to use the opportunity to drive some "foot" traffic to their exhibits.
Below you can find maps with the location of the Brimstone Museum, along with a link to their website and Facebook page for more information. In case you're not familiar with the area, you can also find a map of the approximate location where the Maplewood & Beglis Flip Flop was first spotted.
