Traffic in Southwest Louisiana
In Southwest Louisiana, the cities of Lake Charles, Sulphur, Westlake, and the area of Moss Bluff typically experience the most traffic congestion problems. The primary roads in these areas are Interstate 10, I-210, and U.S. Highway 171. All three of these roads have at least four lanes, with some areas wider. At times, these roadways are not wide enough to handle the amount of traffic that is trying to use them. In addition to the usual traffic issues, Southwest Louisiana also has two interstate bridges that are both more than sixty years old, and only four lanes wide. The I-10 Calcasieu River Bridge was built in 1951, and in addition to only having four lanes, it is also steeper and more narrow than modern bridges. This leads to slowdowns and crashes that would likely be avoidable on a newer, wider bridge that is not as steep.
In addition to being frustrating to locals and travelers, traffic congestion also has a negative impact on the economy and quality of life for residents of the area.
There have been several efforts made to try to alleviate the traffic congestion problem in Southwest Louisiana. One such effort is widening I-10 to at least six lanes in most of Southwest Louisiana. The widening project is expected to take several years to complete. There have also been talks of building a new I-10 Calcasieu River Bridge between Westlake and Lake Charles, but so far no plans have been finalized.
