Southwest Louisiana Fire Departments Warn of Rising Wildfire Risk

By Calcasieu Staff

Published October 11, 2024

Louisiana - As the onset of fall brings dry weather, low humidity, and strong winds, fire departments in Southwest Louisiana have seen an increase in grass and wood fires. The combination of these factors, along with the presence of dry grassy fuels, has created an environment in which fires can start easily and spread quickly.

In response to this increased risk, fire officials are urging residents to exercise caution when burning on their properties. Safe burning practices, such as having a water hose available, not leaving the fire unattended, and monitoring weather conditions, are essential to preventing the spread of fires.

Residents are also advised to be aware of burn bans in their area. Currently, Allen Parish and Jefferson Davis Parish have instituted burn bans, while Calcasieu Parish has not, although fire chiefs are closely monitoring the situation and may implement a ban if necessary.

If a resident in Calcasieu Parish plans to conduct a control burn, they are asked to call the non-emergency line at Calcasieu Parish E911 (337-439-9911) to notify them of the location. This will help fire departments to identify where control burns are taking place and respond accordingly if they get out of control.

In the event of a fire that spreads beyond control, residents are instructed to call 911 immediately.
