The National Weather Service (NWS) Lake Charles has issued an enhanced risk for severe thunderstorms across much of the region, indicating a higher probability of dangerous weather impacts.
All Modes of Severe Weather Possible
According to the NWS, all modes and hazards of severe weather are possible, including:
- Damaging Winds: There’s a 30-44% chance of damaging winds within 25 miles of any given location. There is an elevated threat of trees and powerlines downed by strong winds. There is a threat of wind speeds exceeding 74 mph in isolated areas as well.
- Tornadoes: The region faces a 5-14% chance of a tornado within 25 miles. EF2 or stronger tornadoes are a possibility as well.
- Large Hail: There’s a 15-44% chance of large hail within 25 miles. Hail larger than 2 inches in diameter is possible in isolated locations.
- Localized Flash Flooding: Residents should be aware of the potential for rapid onset flash flooding, with a 5-39% chance of excessive rainfall leading to flooding within 25 miles.
Areas of Greatest Concern
The forecast highlights that the most elevated risk appears to be centered over areas slightly north of Lake Charles and extending into central Louisiana. However, all of Southwest Louisiana should remain vigilant.
