Lake Charles, Louisiana - In the latest Winter weather update, Southwest Louisiana is preparing for a significant drop in temperatures next week, with forecasts indicating the possibility of snow and freezing rain. A cold air mass is expected to settle over the region, beginning Sunday night, leading to prolonged periods of subfreezing temperatures. The temperature is projected to fall to freezing by Sunday night, and it may not rise above the 30s until Thursday afternoon.

Winds will add to the severity of the weather, creating wind chills that could feel as low as the teens. According to meteorological reports, there is currently a 50-60% chance of snow in Southwest Louisiana on Tuesday, with a 20-30% possibility of accumulating up to two inches. While the chance of freezing rain has decreased, there remains a 5-20% probability of ice accumulation in some regions. These percentages are expected to fluctuate as the weekend progresses.

Key messages from the National Weather Service emphasize the risks associated with these temperature drops. Residents should prepare for dangerous conditions, particularly during the night through Thursday, when wind chills could pose health risks. In Southeast Texas, Central Louisiana, and other surrounding regions, the likelihood of snow accumulation on Tuesday remains significant, with forecasts suggesting a 50-60% chance.

Specific counties are experiencing varying probabilities of freezing rain. Jefferson and Orange Counties, along with several parishes including Cameron, Calcasieu, and Lafayette, have a 20% chance of freezing rain. Meanwhile, other areas, such as Tyler and Hardin counties, have a lower probability, ranging from 5-10%. A near-zero probability of freezing rain has been noted in Vernon, Rapides, and Avoyelles parishes, indicating that not all areas will experience the same weather conditions.

As the region braces for these potentially hazardous weather patterns, residents are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions.
