Southwest Louisiana and Southeast Texas Brace for Significant Snow Accumulation on January 21

Lake Charles, Louisiana - A winter storm is set to impact Southwest Louisiana and Southeast Texas on Tuesday, January 21, bringing significant snow accumulation to the region. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch in anticipation of the hazardous conditions expected to develop.

Forecasts indicate that areas north of Interstate 10 could see total snow accumulations ranging from 5 to 7 inches, while regions from Interstate 10 to the coast are expected to receive between 3 to 5 inches of snow. These predictions may vary in narrower swaths, leading to the potential for higher or lower totals in localized areas.

The implications of these snowfall amounts are serious, especially in areas of Louisiana and Texas that don't usually see Winter weather like this. Higher snow totals could result in substantial weight on structures, leading to failures in flat roofs and overhangs. Additionally, strong winds accompanying the snow may cause tree limbs to break and down power lines, which could result in sporadic power outages across the region.

Travel conditions are expected to deteriorate significantly, with vehicle travel becoming very difficult and hazardous. Residents are advised to prepare for potentially treacherous roadways and consider postponing non-essential travel during the storm.

In addition to the Winter Storm Watch, a Cold Weather Advisory has been issued for the morning of Sunday, January 18. This advisory highlights the need for residents to dress warmly and take precautions against the cold temperatures that precede the snow.

As the situation evolves, it is crucial for residents to stay informed about changing weather conditions.
