Sheriff’s Office in Louisiana Saves More Than $10k Using New Type of Shoe in Correctional Center
Caddo Parish, Louisiana – A Sheriff’s Office in Louisiana said they are saving more than $10,000 by using a new type of shoe in the correctional center.
Lt. Disha Darby of the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office devised a novel technique to save taxpayers thousands of dollars while also making the correctional facility safer. The Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office strives to be fiscally responsible with taxpayer funds. Last year, the Caddo Correctional Facility began saving more than $10,000 in taxpayer dollars by purchasing a new style of shoes for inmates who are booked into the institution, which helps to stretch the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office’s 70-million-dollar budget.
The new type of shoe replaces tennis shoes and shower slippers that used to be handed out separately. The new shoe functions as both types of shoes in one, and rather than costing $7.19 for tennis shoes plus $2.80 for shower slippers, the new shoes cost only $5.80. Deputies say that it is also harder for inmates to hide items in the new shoes.
Lt. Darby is responsible for clothing, shoes, hygiene, and other personal items inmates receive when they are booked into the Caddo Correctional Center and got the idea for the change while attending a Louisiana Sheriff’s Association Conference.
