Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana - A Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued by the National Weather Service in Lake Charles, Louisiana, early Thursday morning, affecting south central Calcasieu Parish, including the communities of Sulphur, Lake Charles, Westlake, Moss Bluff, Carlyss, and Edgerly. The warning, effective from 3:04 a.m. to 4:00 a.m. CDT, was prompted by radar indicating a severe thunderstorm near Sulphur moving west at 15 mph, capable of producing wind gusts up to 60 mph.
According to the National Weather Service, a Severe Thunderstorm Warning is declared when storms capable of generating wind speeds of 58 mph or higher, or hail at least one inch in diameter, are detected by radar or reported by trained observers. These storms often pose imminent threats to life and property, including damage to roofs, siding, trees, and sometimes utility poles from the force of high winds.
Communities listed in the warning zone were advised to move immediately to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, with special caution urged for residents in mobile homes, which are particularly vulnerable to strong winds. The alert warned that, in addition to high winds, large hail and frequent lightning were occurring with this storm—a situation known for its hazards, as lightning remains a leading cause of weather-related deaths in the United States.
