Weather Service Warns of Dangerous Conditions for Fire Spread in parts of Louisiana and Texas on Thursday

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Lake Charles has issued a Red Flag Warning for Thursday, March 20 for multiple regions spanning Louisiana and Texas, alerting residents to conditions that significantly increase the risk of wildfires.

The warning covers Southwest Louisiana, Southeast Texas, Central Louisiana, and Southcentral Louisiana, where weather conditions are combining to create potentially hazardous fire situations.

According to meteorologists, a cold front moving through the region is bringing extremely dry air along with strong winds. These conditions are expected to create relative humidity levels dropping as low as 15% on Thursday afternoon. When paired with wind gusts reaching up to 30 miles per hour, these elements create an environment where fires can spread rapidly and become difficult to contain.

"Relative humidity" refers to the amount of moisture in the air compared to what the air could potentially hold at that temperature. The lower this percentage, the drier the conditions.

The NWS has specifically warned against any burning activities while the Red Flag Warning remains in effect. Even small, controlled burns have the potential to quickly escalate into larger, more dangerous fires under these conditions.

Residents in the affected areas are advised to postpone any planned burning activities and to exercise extreme caution with potential ignition sources including cigarettes, outdoor grilling, and machinery that could create sparks.

Local fire departments are expected to be on heightened alert during this period, as response times become more critical when fires can spread at accelerated rates.
