DeQuincy, LA – A structure fire in DeQuincy was quickly contained Tuesday morning thanks to rapid response from multiple fire departments and a working smoke detector that alerted the home’s occupant to the danger.
At 7:46 a.m., firefighters from DeQuincy Volunteer Fire Department, Ward 6 Fire Protection District 1, and Houston River Fire Department responded to reports of a structure fire in the 900 block of Smith Street in DeQuincy, Louisiana.
DeQuincy Engine 19 was first on scene, where firefighters observed fire and smoke venting from the front window of the residence. The crew immediately implemented a transitional fire attack strategy, which involves applying water from the exterior before moving to interior operations.
Their quick actions successfully contained the fire to the room where it originated, though smoke damage was reported throughout the residence. Beauregard Parish Fire District 2 provided mutual aid support, responding with an engine company and four personnel.
Fire officials credit a working smoke detector with potentially saving the occupant’s life. The resident was alerted to the fire by the alarm and managed to escape safely through a bedroom window.
Early warning systems provide crucial minutes that can mean the difference between life and death during a fire emergency.
For residents who need smoke detectors, local fire departments offer free installation through the Operation Save a Life program, coordinated by the Louisiana Office of State Fire Marshal. DeQuincy Volunteer Fire Department, Ward 6 Fire, and Houston River Fire all participate in this life-saving initiative.
Ward 6 Fire Protection residents can arrange for free smoke detector installation by contacting the department via Facebook, calling 337-786-2775, or emailing [email protected].
Fire safety experts recommend checking smoke detector batteries monthly and replacing the entire unit every 10 years to ensure proper functioning during emergencies.
