Lake Charles, Louisiana – On September 22, 2022, the City of Lake Charles announced that pumpkins will fly across the sandy shoreline of I-10 North Beach in Lake Charles from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, November 5, 2022.
The City of Lake Charles and the Louisiana Region 5 STEM Center are collaborating this fall to introduce STEM-based fun with a brand new event, a Pumpkin Chunking Contest!

Teams of high school students can now register to compete. Teams will build their own pumpkin launcher between now and the contest date and then have the opportunity to put their innovation to the test on Saturday, November 5. This will be a spectator event that is free and open to the public.

“Following this summer’s successful robotics camps, we were looking for a unique way to expand on offering STEM-based programming for our youth,” said Lake Charles Mayor Nic Hunter. “We are proud to partner with the Region 5 STEM Center on this inaugural event that will inspire local high school students to test their creativity and STEM skills in a high-flying, fun way that’s just in time for fall!”

Registration is now open. To enter or learn more, follow this link, call the Region 5 STEM Center at (337) 217-4390, ext. 5335, or email [email protected].
