Postal Service Employee in Louisiana Indicted for Theft of Mail, Faces Up to 5 Years in Prison

Louisiana – U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans announced today that JAVONTE RICHARD, age 29, of New Orleans, Louisiana, was indicted on December 16, 2021, for Theft of Mail by a Postal Service employee in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 1709.
According to the accusation, on November 14, 2019, while executing her assigned responsibilities as a United States Postal Service employee, RICHARD removed a parcel entrusted to her and which came into her possession to be delivered by mail.
RICHARD risks a potential sentence of five years imprisonment, three years of supervised release, a $250,000 fine, and a $100 obligatory special assessment charge if convicted.
United States Attorney Evans reiterated that the indictment is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
U.S. Attorney Evans commended the Office of the Inspector General of the United States Postal Inspection Service for their investigation. The prosecution is led by Assistant US Attorney Jon Maestri.
