Possible Flaring, Noise, Heavy Smoke Due to a Reported Upset at Petrochemical Plant Near Westlake

On Monday, February 15, 2021, at approximately 2 am a petrochemical plant near Westlake, LA issued a notification to expect possible flaring and heavy smoke due to a unit upset. In addition to the flaring and possible smoke, residents can also expect to hear some loud noises caused by the flaring.

Flaring is often used to safely remove dangerous gasses with lower harm to the environment and to safely regulate pressure in chemical plants.
