UPDATE: At approximately 1:45 p.m. a plant employee indicated that the explosion was caused by a pump startup. There were no injuries reported and the area is not under a shelter in place.
Several nearby buildings were also damaged by the explosion, including hurricane shutters for a fire station near the plan.
At approximately 1:10 p.m., January 13, 2020, multiple people reported hearing and feeling an explosion throughout parts of Southwest Louisiana. Shortly after that authorities began being dispatched to an explosion at the Sasol Chemical Complex located at 2201 Old Spanish Trail in Westlake.
