Police Officer in Louisiana Injured When Truck Collides with a Marked Police Vehicle While the Officer was Assisting Stranded Motorist
Shreveport, Louisiana – A Shreveport Police Sergeant was injured when a truck collided with a marked police vehicle while the officer was assisting a stranded motorist on the interstate. The driver was arrested on the spot for suspected impairment and later charged with first-degree vehicular negligent injury.
The Shreveport Police Department reported on January 13, 2023, that officers were called to assist a motorist stranded on Interstate 20 East at Hearne Avenue on Thursday, January 12, 2023, at approximately 10:40 p.m. A resident reported a vehicle parked in the middle of the interstate to the Shreveport Police Department.
A Shreveport Police Department Sergeant responded to assist. Because the stranded vehicle could not be moved, the Sergeant positioned a marked Shreveport Police Department vehicle in the middle lane, behind the stranded vehicle, with his overhead emergency lights engaged. At 11:20 p.m., a 2017 Toyota Tundra collided with the Shreveport Police vehicle, driving it into the concrete barrier.
The Shreveport Fire Department arrived and brought the officer to Ochsner LSU Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Officers apprehended the driver of the 2017 Toyota, Garry Luke Hicks, on the spot for showing signs of suspected impairment. Hicks was placed into the Shreveport City Jail for first-degree vehicular negligent injury after additional investigation.
An arrest is an indication that probable cause exists to believe the subject was involved in the offense alleged. A person is innocent until proven guilty.
