Police in Louisiana Suspect Impairment and Speed as Factors in Early Morning Fatal Single-Vehicle Crash on LA 56

Louisiana – On November 10, 2022, Louisiana State Police reported that soon before 2:00 a.m., LSP Troop C was notified of a single-vehicle fatal crash on Thompson Road Extension near Louisiana Highway 56. Cody Schexnayder, 48, of Houma, Louisiana, died in the crash.

The early inquiry found Schexnayder, who was driving a 2015 Chevrolet Corvette, was speeding east on Thompson Road Extension. The Corvette went off the road to the right while in a bend, struck a ditch, and overturned several times before coming to a standstill for unknown reasons.
Schexnayder, who was wearing a seatbelt, suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. A passenger in the Corvette who was also restrained received moderate injuries and was taken to an out-of-town hospital for treatment.

Impairment is thought to be a factor in this collision. Schexnayder’s toxicological sample was taken and sent for testing. This accident is still being investigated.

Speeding increases your risk of being hurt or killed in a crash, increases your odds of losing control, and reduces your capacity to react to or avoid a roadway hazard. Alcohol and other drugs can also impair your vision, fine motor abilities, and reaction times. Drivers should make a plan for a safe ride home before consuming any alcohol or drugs because if you feel different, you drive differently.

In 2022, Troop C investigated 43 fatal crashes that resulted in 47 deaths.
