From Louisiana State Police, Sulphur, LA –  Louisiana State Police reported that on September 19, 2021, at 7:45 p.m., Troopers from Troop D responded to a crash involving a pedestrian on Interstate 10 about 7 miles west of LA Hwy 1256 (Ruth Street) in Calcasieu Parish. The crash claimed the life of 48-year-old David Joseph Williams of Aurora, Colorado.

The initial investigation revealed Williams and another occupant in a 2014 Jeep had pulled over onto the shoulder of the roadway. At some point, Williams exited the Jeep and attempted to cross the westbound lanes of travel when he was struck by a westbound 2020 Lexus SUV. Williams sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Lexus was not injured and impairment is not suspected. Toxicology samples were obtained from Williams and the driver of the Lexus for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Troopers urge pedestrians to maintain a heightened level of awareness while walking near the road. Simple precautions such as wearing reflective materials, avoiding distractions, and walking a safe distance from travel lanes while facing oncoming traffic could help prevent many pedestrian-related crashes.

Troop D has investigated 25 fatal crashes resulting in 25 deaths in 2021.
