Oklahoma Couple Injured, Louisiana Man Arrested in Hit-and-Run Rollover Crash on I-49

Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana – An Oklahoma couple was injured and a Louisiana man has been arrested in a hit-and-run rollover crash on I-49.

On February 22, 2023, the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Office reported that an Oklahoma couple traveling home suffered minor injuries during a morning hit & run crash on Interstate-49 near milepost 125 south of Cypress, Louisiana.

Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Deputies, Natchitoches Regional Medical Center EMS, and Natchitoches Parish Fire Districts #1 and #5 responded to NATCOM 911 Center reports of an overturned pickup truck and RV trailer with suspected injuries on I-49 south of Cypress, Louisiana at approximately 9:17 a.m.

Deputies say the Oklahoma couple told them they were heading northbound on I-49 near milepost 125 in the right lane when another northbound vehicle in the left lane drifted and crossed over the center line into their lane, striking their vehicle. This prompted them to exit the road on the right side, overturning many times before coming to a stop near a tree line.

The Chevrolet truck and the Wildwood Elite RV trailer, which had become detached from the frame, were severely damaged.
EMS treated both occupants at the site and released them without transport.

The vehicle’s occupants and bystanders were able to provide a description of the suspect vehicle, which failed to stop at the scene and drove northward on I-49.
Deputies responded to the area, while others set up on Interstate 49 near Natchitoches, Louisiana. LADOTD employees who were nearby also responded to help the couple.

Deputies stopped the suspected vehicle on the I-49 Natchitoches Exit Ramp a short time later.

Breyone D. Grimes, 35, of Shreveport, Louisiana, was apprehended, transported, and booked into the Natchitoches Parish Detention Center on charges of Hit & Run, Driving Under Suspension, Possession of Schedule I Narcotics, Possession of CDS Schedule IV Narcotics, and Probation Violation.

Authorities say Grimes stated he didn’t stop because “he knew he was driving under suspension and would be in trouble”.

The suspected narcotics were discovered during a vehicle inventory.

Deputies and a local towing business stayed throughout the cleanup procedure.
Authorities ask drivers to drive carefully, pay attention to the road, and avoid distractions if they are passing through the region.

Deputies advise drivers to always wear seat belts. Seat belt use, like in this scenario, can lower the risk of injury or death.

An arrest is an indication that probable cause exists to believe the subject was involved in the offense alleged. A person is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
