Officer-Involved Shooting in Lake Charles Being Investigated by Louisiana State Police

A Lake Charles man was shot by an LCPD officer after he used the vehicle he was driving to strike at least one marked LCPD vehicle.

Update:

Lake Charles – In an update, Louisiana State Police reported that according to the preliminary investigation, officers with the Lake Charles Police Department (LCPD) responded to a report of an unresponsive driver in a vehicle near the intersection of Common Street and 7th Street in Lake Charles at approximately 4:30 a.m. on February 9, 2022. Officers made contact with the subject upon arrival, who was later identified as 41-year-old Richard Malone of Lake Charles. An altercation occurred between Malone and LCPD officers during the encounter. Malone used his vehicle and collided with at least one marked Lake Charles Police Department vehicle. An LCPD officer fired his weapon during the altercation, striking Malone in the upper left arm.

A southbound pursuit on Common Street ensued before Malone lost control of his vehicle and crashed near the intersection of Common Street and Scott Street. Malone was taken to Lake Charles Memorial Hospital to be treated.

Nobody else was hurt.

The Louisiana State Police is leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting. The Forensic Investigative Unit of the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and is assisting with the investigation.

This is an ongoing investigation, and more information will be released as soon as it becomes available.

Lake Charles – According to Louisiana State Police, this morning, detectives assigned to the LSP Bureau of Investigations were requested by the Lake Charles Police Department to investigate an officer-involved shooting involving one of their officers.

The subject was transported to an area hospital for treatment. No one else was injured during this incident.

The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office Forensics Investigative Unit is processing the scene for evidence. This is an active investigation and further information will be released when it becomes available.
