New Orleans Felon Sentenced to Prison After Authorities Locate Multiple Loaded Firearms in His Home
New Orleans, Louisiana – A New Orleans felon has been sentenced to prison after authorities found multiple loaded firearms in his home.
On May 26, 2023, U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans announced that Newman Hooker, age 30, of New Orleans, Louisiana was sentenced on May 25, 2023, by U.S. District Judge Barry W. Ashe to 42 months imprisonment followed by three years of supervised release, and a mandatory $100 special assessment fee for being a felon in possession of a firearm.
According to court filings, New Orleans Police Officers executed a search warrant at Hooker’s home on May 30, 2022. Authorities seized Hooker’s loaded Glock Model 22 pistol with an extended magazine and a loaded Panzer Arms shotgun. Police also recovered handgun and shotgun ammunition, shotgun drums, and firearms accessories.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program that brings together law enforcement at all levels and the communities they serve to minimize violent crime and gun violence and make our neighborhoods safer for everyone. The Department launched a violent crime reduction strategy to strengthen PSN on May 26, 2021, based on the following core principles: fostering trust and legitimacy in our communities, supporting community-based organizations that help prevent violence in the first place, setting focused and strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring the results.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the New Orleans Police Department investigated this case. The prosecution was handled by Assistant US Attorneys David Berman of the Violent Crimes Unit and Rachal Cassagne of the Narcotics Unit.
