New Free Fishing Education Courses Launched by Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries
The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries announced on August 18, 2022, the launch of its exciting new Fishing Course Series, which will offer ongoing short but informative training sessions throughout the state on a variety of fishing topics that will appeal to both beginner and experienced anglers.
The series’ first offering will be the Intro to Fishing course, which will serve as one of the series’ cornerstone classes. It will concentrate on effectively instructing both new and rusty fishermen on simple but varied tactics for getting started in fishing, as well as providing participants with the knowledge and expertise required to begin fishing on their own.
The first three Intro to Fishing courses are scheduled as follows:
- August 27th at the Woodworth Outdoor Education Center in Woodworth
- September 17th at Laketown Park in Kenner
- September 22nd at Waddill Wildlife Refuge in Baton Rouge
Each class will be limited to 10 participants aged 18 and over, who will receive an hour of educational, simple fishing instruction followed by an hour of actual fishing time with LDWF Fisheries Outreach Biologists. Participants are urged to bring their own gear, but equipment will be provided. All attendees will get a packet of instructive material and starter tackle, courtesy of H&H Lure. To participate, anglers must be 18 or older and have a valid recreational fishing license.
The Fishing Course Series will give an ever-growing number of classes at the introductory, intermediate, and advanced levels, covering a wide range of target species and techniques commonly utilized in Louisiana. In addition to the usual Intro to Fishing courses, an Intro to Catfishing course will be offered later this fall. Several other courses are in the works, and the LDWF is thrilled to provide this new resource to Louisiana anglers.

The Foundation’s main goal is to encourage support for LDWF programs by connecting people and businesses with Louisiana’s natural resources. Visit www.lawff.org for additional details.
The Sport Fish Restoration Fund, a USFWS grant program that distributes grant funds to state, District of Columbia, and insular area fish and wildlife agencies for fishery projects, boating access, and aquatic education, is funding the Fishing Course Series.
