Louisiana – The National Hurricane Center has initiated advisories on Potential Tropical Cyclone 6, which is expected to make landfall across the upper Texas or Louisiana coasts by Wednesday, September 11, 2024, possibly bringing strong winds as early as Tuesday night. The system, currently located in the southern Gulf of Mexico, is forecast to intensify over the next couple of days, bringing strong winds, storm surge, and flooding rainfall to the region.

According to satellite-derived winds, the system is already producing winds of 40 to 45 mph on its western side, although it does not yet have a well-defined center. Environmental conditions are conducive for additional development, and a tropical storm is likely to form over the next day or so.

The National Hurricane Center advises that interests along the Gulf coast of Mexico, upper Texas, and Louisiana coasts should closely monitor the progress of this system. Tropical Storm Watches could be required for portions of the coast of northeastern Mexico and southern Texas later today or tonight, with additional watches possible along the coast of Texas and Louisiana later tonight or Monday.

An Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft is currently en route to investigate the system this afternoon, providing critical data to aid in forecasting and warning efforts. The National Weather Service has issued High Seas Forecasts, which include gale warnings, to inform mariners and coastal residents of the potential dangers.

The chances of formation through 48 hours and 7 days are both high, at 90 percent, indicating a strong likelihood of the system strengthening into a tropical storm.

As the situation continues to develop, residents and visitors in the affected areas are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
