Multiple Suspects From Louisiana Arrested For Allegedly Attempting to Bring Contraband Into a Penal Facility

Ascension Parish, Louisiana – Several people from Louisiana have been arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle items into a prison.

The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office (APSO) reported on May 4, 2023, that several offenders had been apprehended after allegedly attempting to carry contraband into a jail.

According to Ascension Parish Sheriff Bobby Webre, deputies arrested Taja Thornton, 22, of Prairieville, Louisiana, Laney Welch (inmate), 53, and Joshua Harris (inmate), 25, on Tuesday, May 2, for the attempted introduction of contraband into a penal facility.

Deputies began investigating the subjects after reportedly learning that Harris and Welch, both inmates at the Ascension Parish Jail, were collaborating with Thorton to deliver cell phones and tobacco products to a medical facility where Welch was receiving treatment. Before any of the materials were introduced into the facility, deputies were able to intercede and obtain the package. Thorton was taken into custody and booked into the Ascension Parish Jail. Harris and Welch were charged with the additional offense.

An arrest is an indication that probable cause exists to believe the subject was involved in the offense alleged. All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
