Louisiana – A devastating series of single-vehicle crashes occurred in the Acadiana area claiming the lives of five individuals. Louisiana State Police Troop I responded to three separate incidents, each resulting in fatalities.

The first crash occurred on Louisiana Highway 13 near Bluefish Road in Lyons Point, Louisiana, in Acadia Parish, shortly after 5:00 p.m. A 2003 Toyota 4Runner, carrying three occupants, veered off the roadway to the right, entered a ditch, and struck a culvert before overturning onto its roof. The victims, 27-year-old Javonta Flugence, 26-year-old Amber Davy, and 2-year-old Caroline Flugence, all from Crowley, sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced deceased at the scene. The investigation is ongoing to determine who was driving at the time of the crash, as the occupants were unrestrained and partially ejected.

In St. Landry Parish, a single-vehicle crash occurred on LA Hwy 93 near Grand Lake Drive in Arnaudville, Louisiana around 6:00 p.m. Kevin Meche, 53, of Arnaudville, was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado when it veered off the roadway to the right, entered a ditch, and continued to travel south before re-entering the roadway and overturning multiple times. Meche, who was restrained, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The third incident took place in Iberia Parish, on LA Hwy 87 near LSU Bridge Road in Jeanerette, Louisiana around 7:00 p.m. Felix Richard, 45, of New Iberia, was driving a 2011 Chevrolet Camaro when it veered off the road to the right, entered a ditch, and struck an embankment before hitting a tree. Richard, who was unrestrained, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Standard toxicology samples were collected for analysis in all three crashes, which remain under investigation.

The Louisiana State Police would like to remind motorists that wearing seatbelts significantly decreases the risk of injury or death in a crash. Additionally, distracted, inattentive, and reckless driving continue to be leading causes of crashes in the state. By taking simple precautions like ensuring all occupants wear seatbelts, following traffic laws, and adhering to speed limits, drivers can increase safety on the roads.
