Motorcyclist Succumbs to Injuries Sustained in Crash on I-20 in Louisiana, Impairment is Suspected as a Factor

Choudrant, Louisiana – Louisiana State Police stated on January 11, 2023, that on Saturday, January 7, 2023, at approximately 4:15 p.m., LSP Troop F responded to a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 20 west of Louisiana Highway 145. Matthew L. McCarthy, 47, died as a result of this collision.

McCarthy was heading west on Interstate 20 on a 2014 Harley-Davidson motorcycle, according to a preliminary inquiry. The motorcycle exited the roadway and collided with the median cable barrier for unknown reasons.

McCarthy, who was wearing a DOT-approved helmet, suffered serious injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital. Authorities indicated that impairment is thought to be a factor. Toxicology samples were collected and sent for testing.

McCarthy died from his injuries on January 11, according to LSP Troop F. This crash is still being investigated.

Although the specific reason for the incident is still being investigated, Troopers want to warn the public that inattentive and distracted driving is dangerous and a top cause of crashes in our state. To stay alert, motorists must pay attention to what is going on outside of the car they are driving and get plenty of rest.

This is Troop F's first fatal crash investigation in 2023.
