Kraemer, Louisiana - A 52-year-old Madisonville man died in a two-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 307 on Thursday afternoon, according to Louisiana State Police Troop C.

Richard Billiot, 52 of Madisonville, Louisiana, was riding a 2025 Yamaha motorcycle when he collided with a 2019 Jeep Wrangler near Sanchez Road shortly after 2:00 p.m. on September 26, 2025. The crash occurred as Billiot attempted to pass the Jeep in a designated passing zone.

The preliminary investigation shows the Jeep was traveling east on LA Highway 307 and had stopped in the roadway to allow westbound traffic to pass while waiting to turn left into a private driveway. Billiot was also traveling east on his motorcycle behind the Jeep when the crash occurred.

As the Jeep began its left turn into the private driveway, the Yamaha attempted to pass the vehicle. The motorcycle struck the driver's side door of the Jeep during this maneuver, police said.

Despite wearing a Department of Transportation-approved helmet, Billiot sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene. The Jeep's driver was properly restrained and suffered only minor injuries in the crash.

Louisiana State Police collected a standard toxicology sample from Billiot and submitted it for analysis as part of their investigation. The Jeep driver was determined not to be impaired and voluntarily provided a breath sample that showed no alcohol detected.

The crash remains under investigation by Louisiana State Police Troop C.

Passing zones on Louisiana highways are marked areas where drivers can legally overtake slower-moving vehicles when visibility and road conditions allow for safe passing. However, drivers attempting to pass must ensure they can complete the maneuver safely without interfering with oncoming traffic or vehicles making turns.

This incident highlights the importance of maintaining safe following distances and exercising caution when passing other vehicles, particularly in areas where drivers may be making turns or stops.
