Published December 2, 2021

A Metairie man has been charged with contractor fraud in Lake Charles after allegedly not completing work that was paid for and not possessing a contractor’s license.

Lake Charles, LA – A homeowner in Lake Charles reported fraud to the Calcasieu Parish Contractor Fraud Response Team in April 2021. During the investigation, the victim informed police that they had engaged Jason L. Mears, 45, Metairie, LA, owner of Jason Mears Roofing & Construction, to fix damages to their property caused by Hurricane Laura. Mears accepted over $8,000 in compensation for labor and materials for repairs, according to the inquiry. Some of the materials and work that had been paid for had allegedly not been delivered or completed, according to the victim. Mears also allegedly didn’t have a contractor’s license, according to investigators.

Following further investigation, detectives obtained a warrant for Mears’ arrest on November 1, 2021, charging him with $5,000 to $25,000 in residential contractor fraud and contractor fraud failure to possess a license. His bond was set at $7,000 by Judge Derek Kee. The West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office located Mears on November 28, 2021, and booked him into the West Baton Rouge Parish Detention Center. Mears will be extradited back to Calcasieu Parish at a later date.

Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office Detective Chris Duhon is the lead investigator on this case.

An arrest is an indication that probable cause exists to believe the subject was involved in the offense alleged. A person is innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
