McNeese Fall 2020 Sports Suspended Due to COVID-19 Concerns
Published August 13, 2020
On Thursday, August 13, 2020, McNeese State University Director of Athletics Heath Schroyer announced that all fall sports competitions will be suspended. This came after an announcement on the same day by the Southland Conference Board of Directors to suspend competitions for its schools in the sports of football, volleyball, women's soccer and cross country due to concerns about COVID-19. Southern Conference schools do have the option of participating in some non-conference competition during the fall, but a majority of schools are expected to suspend to also postpone fall competitions.
During the announcement, Interim Director of Athletics Heath Schroyer said "After consulting with (McNeese President) Dr. (Daryl) Burckel and numerous medical professionals, we feel like this is the right decision," and "We are student-athlete centered and the health and safety of all of our student-athletes is first and foremost."
Currently, Southland Conference athletic directors are beginning to discuss returning to competition in the spring of 2021.
Other college sports conferences that have already altered or suspended their fall competition season include the Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Ivy League, Mid-Eastern Athletic, Missouri Valley Football League, Northeast, Patriot, Pioneer Football League, and the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
