SULPHUR, LA – Emergency vehicles will converge and a medical helicopter will touch down at Sulphur High School’s 9th Grade Campus this Thursday as part of a planned educational exercise, school officials announced.
On March 27th, students enrolled in Calcasieu Parish School Board’s Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) classes will participate in a simulated mass casualty drill on the field behind the Sulphur High 9th Grade Campus. The exercise aims to provide students with realistic emergency response training in a controlled environment.
This valuable training experience allows students to apply classroom knowledge in scenarios that mimic real-world emergencies. The drill helps develop critical thinking and practical skills that are essential in emergency medicine.
During the exercise, community members and parents might notice an increased presence of emergency vehicles on campus. Additionally, an Acadian Emergency Helicopter is scheduled to land at the school as part of the simulation, adding authenticity to the training scenario.
School officials emphasize that the heightened emergency presence is part of the planned drill, and there is no cause for concern. The exercise has been coordinated with local emergency services to ensure safety while maximizing educational value.
Mass casualty incident training prepares future first responders to handle situations where multiple victims require immediate medical attention, such as after natural disasters or large-scale incidents. These simulations teach triage methods—the process of prioritizing patients based on injury severity—and effective resource management during crises.
The EMR and EMT programs represent part of Calcasieu Parish School Board’s career and technical education offerings, preparing students for potential careers in emergency services while earning certifications before graduation.
