Louisiana Woman Struck and Killed While Walking on I-10 Frontage Road Near Iowa
Calcasieu Parish – On May 8, 2022, Louisiana State Police reported that Troopers from LSP Troop D responded to a pedestrian crash on LA Hwy 3256 (I-10 South Frontage Road) just west of Iowa in Calcasieu Parish on May 7, 2022, shortly before 11:00 p.m. Tonya Morgan Young, 39, of Elton, Louisiana, was killed in the crash.
According to the preliminary investigation, Young was walking in the westbound lane of travel on LA 3256 while dressed in dark clothing. At the same time, a driver in a 2014 Buick Verano driving west struck Young. Young was then hit a second time by an unknown vehicle traveling east. Young died as a result of her injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Buick’s driver and passenger were unharmed. Although no impairment on the part of the Buick driver is suspected, a toxicology sample was obtained and submitted for analysis. This crash is still being investigated.
Louisiana State Police said that a majority of pedestrian fatalities, nearly 70 percent, occur at night. Troopers urge pedestrians to maintain a heightened level of awareness while walking near or on roadways. Simple precautions such as wearing reflective materials, avoiding distractions, not walking too close to roadways, and walking against the flow of traffic could prevent most pedestrian related crashes.
