Louisiana Woman Sentenced For Theft of Over $319k in Government Funds

New Orleans, Louisiana – A woman from Louisiana has been sentenced for stealing more than $319,000 in government funds.

On May 17, 2023, United States Attorney Duane A. Evans announced that Linda Reed Hill (“Hill”), age 76, of Slidell, Louisiana, was sentenced on May 16, 2023, for Theft of Government Funds in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 641.

According to documents filed in federal court, Hill did knowingly embezzle, steal, purloin, and convert to her use money belonging to the United States and a department and agency thereof, namely the Social Security Administration, to which she was not entitled, beginning on or about May 1, 2004, and continuing until on or about February 28, 2021, when she withdrew funds from a joint JP Morgan Chase account registered both under her own name and Individual “A’s” name.

Prior to April 28, 2004, Person “A” received SSA Retirement Survivor Insurance (“RSI”). Individual “A” continued to receive monthly SSA disability benefits ranging from $1,310.00 to $1,518.00 each month after Person “A’s” death, from about May 2004 to February 2021, totaling $319,696.00. SSA subsequently transferred these funds into a joint JP Morgan Chase Savings account shared by Hill and Person “A.” The monthly SSA money was then transferred from the joint account to two separate accounts named under Hill’s name, then withdrawn by Hill.

Hill was sentenced to four years probation, $319,696 in restitution to the Social Security Administration, and a $100 mandatory special assessment charge by United States District Judge Greg G. Guidry.

The United States Attorney’s Office would also like to thank the Social Security Administration’s Office of Inspector General for its help in this matter. This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian M. Klebba, Chief of the Financial Crimes Unit.
