Vernon Parish, Louisiana – Louisiana State Police Troop E arrived at the scene of a fatal two-vehicle collision on U.S. Highway 171 at Entrance Road at around 10:30 a.m. on April 27, 2024, taking the life of 74-year-old Hui Son Lyons from New Llano, Louisiana.
The first examination showed that a 2007 Nissan Versa, driven by Lyons, was heading west on Entrance Road and stopped at U.S. Highway 171. When the traffic light turned green, Lyons tried to cross the northbound lanes to go south on U.S. Highway 171. However, a northbound 2011 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by 69-year-old Haskel Roshong of Logansport, Louisiana reportedly did not stop at the red light for unknown reasons and crashed into the Versa.
Lyons, who was wearing a seatbelt, suffered severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Roshong and another passenger, who were also wearing seatbelts, suffered only minor injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital. Standard toxicology tests were conducted and sent for further examination.
The reason for the crash is still being looked into, but distracted and careless driving is still one of the main reasons for crashes in our state. Louisiana State Police is urging all drivers to stay focused while on the road, as losing concentration can lead to tragic outcomes.
So far in 2024, Troop E Troopers have investigated a total of 21 deadly crashes that resulted in 23 deaths.
