Saint Rose, Louisiana – On the morning of July 22, 2024, a serious crash on US 61 near I-310 resulted in the deaths of four individuals, including two young children. Louisiana State Police Troop B reported that the incident occurred shortly before 6:00 a.m. and involved two vehicles: a 2017 GMC Terrain and a 2021 Volkswagen Passat.
The driver of the GMC, 33-year-old Mathieu Christophe of Laplace, Louisiana was traveling south when the crash occurred. Simultaneously, 38-year-old Benjamin Alexis from Chalmette, Louisiana was driving the Volkswagen north in the southbound lanes of US 61. The investigation into the reasons behind Alexis’s wrong-way driving is ongoing. As the Volkswagen approached the I-310 overpass, it collided head-on with Christophe’s vehicle.
Both Christophe and Benjamin Alexis were pronounced dead at the scene. In the Volkswagen, Alexis’s two sons, 8-year-old Benjamin Alexis III and 5-year-old Charles Alexis, were also in the car as rear-seat passengers along with another juvenile. Reports indicate that the children were not properly restrained. Despite being transported to a local hospital for treatment, Benjamin Alexis III and Charles Alexis succumbed to their injuries, while the additional juvenile remains in critical condition.
Christophe was properly restrained at the time of the crash, though it is unclear whether Alexis was wearing a seatbelt.
Investigators have not ruled out impairment as a factor in this tragic incident, and toxicology samples were collected from both drivers for analysis. The crash remains under investigation as authorities work to piece together the circumstances leading to the collision.
The incident serves as a grim reminder of the importance of seatbelt use and proper child safety restraints. Louisiana law mandates that all passengers in a vehicle must be secured with either a seatbelt or a child safety seat. Experts note that child safety seats provide critical protection for young passengers during a crash, yet statistics reveal that approximately 75% of car seats are either improperly installed or not used at all.
For parents seeking assistance with car seat installation, every Louisiana State Police Troop, including Troop B, offers certified technicians who can help. They are available every Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Troop B’s location in Kenner, LA, with no appointment necessary.
