Patterson, Louisiana – A devastating two-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 90 near Lori Lane has resulted in the loss of two lives, with two juveniles sustaining moderate to severe injuries. The incident occurred on July 25, 2024, at approximately 10:00 p.m. when a 2019 Kenworth 18-wheeler, driven by 43-year-old Marcela Yepes-Restrepo of Texas, attempted to make a U-turn from a center turn lane.

According to the preliminary investigation, Yepes-Restrepo’s 18-wheeler was struck by a 2019 Kia Sorento, driven by 77-year-old Anthony Peck of Franklin, Louisiana which was traveling west in the left lane of U.S. Hwy 90. The collision occurred as the Kia struck the right side of the 18-wheeler while it was making the U-turn. Peck and his front-seat passenger, 58-year-old Betty Hester of Benton, Kentucky, suffered fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.

Two juvenile passengers in the rear of the Kia were transported to nearby hospitals with moderate to severe injuries. Yepes-Restrepo was uninjured in the crash. All occupants involved were properly restrained.

While the investigation is ongoing, authorities have determined that Yepes-Restrepo was not impaired, and a voluntary breath sample showed no alcohol present. A standard toxicology sample was collected from Peck and will be submitted for analysis. Potential charges are pending as the investigation continues.

This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of staying alert while driving. Distracted and inattentive driving are leading causes of crashes in Louisiana, and a single lapse in awareness can have deadly consequences. Louisiana State Police urges all motorists to remain vigilant and focused on the road.

This crash marks the 22nd fatal incident investigated by Troop I in 2024, resulting in a total of 24 fatalities.

All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
