Metairie, Louisiana – A devastating multi-vehicle crash on I-10 West near Bonnabel Boulevard in Metairie, Louisiana, claimed the lives of two individuals in the early hours of Monday, June 17, 2024. The incident occurred when a 2012 Kia Soul and a 2017 Toyota Tundra were involved in a crash, leaving the Kia disabled and abandoned in the roadway.

According to the initial investigation, 78-year-old Carlos Martinez of Kenner, Louisiana was driving a 2007 Toyota Corolla west on I-10 near Bonnabel Boulevard when he collided with the disabled Kia. Martinez exited his vehicle to warn oncoming traffic.

Moments later, a 2006 Infiniti G35, driven by 66-year-old Betty Savoie of Metairie, approached the scene and struck the rear of the Corolla. During this collision, Martinez suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Savoie, who was properly restrained, also suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.

The Infiniti G35 was subsequently struck by a 2014 BMW X5, which was also traveling west on I-10. The crash remains under investigation, with routine toxicology samples collected and submitted for analysis. However, impairment is not suspected at this time.

The Louisiana State Police Troop B are reminding the public of the importance of extra vigilance when driving at night, as visibility is significantly reduced in dark conditions. In the event of a crash, it is crucial to immediately call 911 and move your vehicle out of the road to prevent further incidents. Drivers should remain in their vehicle unless it is absolutely necessary to exit for safety reasons, and under no circumstances should they attempt to direct traffic.
