Laplace, Louisiana - A devastating two-vehicle crash on Interstate 55 in St. John the Baptist Parish on August 12, 2024, resulted in the tragic loss of 37-year-old Erica Sagona of Metairie, Louisiana. The incident occurred around 10:00 a.m. when Sagona's 2006 Ford Escape, which was disabled on the right shoulder of the highway, was struck from behind by a 2004 Ford F-150 driven by 35-year-old Cory Conrad of Magnolia, Mississippi.

According to the Louisiana State Police, Conrad was traveling southbound on Interstate 55 when he attempted to pass a vehicle in front of him by veering onto the right shoulder. Unfortunately, he failed to notice Sagona's stationary vehicle and collided with it, causing fatal injuries to Sagona, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Conrad, who was not wearing a seatbelt, sustained minor injuries in the crash.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, but authorities have arrested Conrad and charged him with reckless driving and negligent homicide. While impairment is not suspected to have played a role in the crash, toxicology samples will be taken and analyzed as part of the investigation.
