Louisiana Traffic Crash: Baton Rouge Officer Faces Negligent Homicide and Other Charges

Baton Rouge, Louisiana – A Baton Rouge police officer, Sharmaire Buckley, aged 28, was arrested by traffic homicide detectives for her involvement in a traffic crash that took place on October 20, 2023, at approximately 10:26 p.m.

The incident occurred at the intersection of Government St and South Foster Dr. Officer Buckley, while driving her marked patrol car, allegedly disregarded the traffic signal and collided with a black Chevrolet Impala. Tragically, the driver of the Impala, Caleb James Chappetta, aged 38, lost his life at the scene. As a result of her actions,

Officer Buckley has been charged with Negligent Homicide as well as two counts of Negligent Injuring. Additionally, she faces charges for Reckless Operation of a Vehicle and Emergency Vehicles; Exceptions. Currently assigned to the Uniform Patrol Division and with two years of experience on the force, Officer Buckley has been placed on Administrative Leave.

An arrest is an indication that probable cause exists to believe the subject was involved in the offense alleged. All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
