St. Landry Parish, Louisiana – In the early hours of December 27, the Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office asked for assistance from Louisiana State Police Troop A to investigate a deadly single-vehicle crash on LA 411 near Jack Torres Road in Pointe Coupee Parish. The crash resulted in the tragic loss of 16-year-old Michael Saavedra-Fernandez from New Orleans, Louisiana.
Initial findings indicated that deputies observed Saavedra-Fernandez driving a 2008 Chevrolet Suburban recklessly on I-10 westbound in Iberville Parish. Despite attempts to pull him over, he continued driving at high speeds through multiple parishes. As he approached the area of LA 411 and Jack Torres Road, he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a tree, causing it to catch fire.
Saavedra-Fernandez sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, while a teenage passenger who was properly restrained suffered moderate injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
The investigation into this incident is ongoing, with speeding, impairment, and failure to use seatbelts identified as significant factors in fatal crashes.
