Louisiana Supreme Court Rules Unanimous Jury Requirement is Not Retroactive
Baton Rouge, Louisiana – The Louisiana Office of the Attorney General stated on October 25, 2022, that in 2020, the United States Supreme Court determined in Ramos v. Louisiana that nonunanimous verdicts were unconstitutional. The Louisiana Supreme Court ruled last week that the Ramos ruling will not be enforced retroactively in Louisiana.
Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry delivered the following statement in response to the ruling:
“The Louisiana Supreme Court overwhelmingly made the right decision. Ruling any other way on this issue would have completely crippled our criminal justice system, which is already on life support,” said Attorney General Landry. “I’d like to applaud our Solicitor General Liz Murrill and her federalism team for arguing this case and securing this ruling.”
