New Orleans, Louisiana – As the Super Bowl approaches, Louisiana State Troopers are gearing up for a week filled with festivities and large crowds, particularly in the French Quarter and its surrounding areas. With an expected influx of visitors, law enforcement anticipates significant traffic disruptions and an increased likelihood of aggressive and impaired drivers on the roads. In response, Governor Jeff Landry has mobilized over 200 Louisiana State Police Troopers from across the state to support the City of New Orleans and the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD).
Troopers will be strategically stationed throughout key locations, including the French Quarter, the Convention Center, and the Superdome, to assist with various logistical roles aimed at ensuring public safety during this high-profile event.
To promote a safe and enjoyable Super Bowl experience, Louisiana State Police have released a series of important safety tips for the public.
Event and Personal Safety Tips:
Attendees are advised to be aware of restricted zones, especially the Caesars Superdome, which is designated as a “No Drone Zone” during the Super Bowl. Additionally, individuals should remain visible and alert by sticking to well-lit, populated areas and avoiding walking alone. Keeping personal belongings secure is crucial; valuables such as cash and expensive jewelry should be concealed, while purses and wallets should be kept securely to reduce the risk of theft.
Distractions can lead to dangerous situations. Therefore, it is recommended that phone use be minimized while walking, allowing individuals to stay attentive to their surroundings. In the Enhanced Security Zone of the French Quarter, coolers and ice chests are prohibited, and any bags or containers larger than 4.5 inches by 6.5 inches are subject to search.
Safety for children is particularly emphasized. Parents are encouraged to help their children identify landmarks, create a plan for what to do if they become separated, and provide identification, such as a phone number written on a piece of paper pinned inside their clothing. Taking a photo of children before heading out is also advisable, as it can assist authorities if a child gets lost.
Driving Safety:
The Louisiana State Police stress the importance of driving sober. It is essential to plan ahead for a safe ride, whether by designating a sober driver, utilizing taxis or rideshare services, or arranging for a sober family member or friend to provide transportation. Louisiana law mandates that all vehicle occupants wear seatbelts, as this remains the safest option in the event of a crash. Troopers will be actively patrolling for impaired drivers, with strict consequences for those who choose to drink and drive.
Parking Considerations:
With limited parking available, public safety officials recommend carpooling or using alternate transportation. Awareness of parking restrictions is critical; violators may face fines or towing. Additionally, individuals should remove valuables from their vehicles or keep them out of sight to deter theft. It is also advisable to double-check that vehicles are locked and windows are closed, while noting nearby landmarks to aid in locating vehicles later.
Reporting Suspicious Activity:
The Louisiana State Police encourage the public to report any suspicious activity. The “See Something, Send Something” app, available as See Send by My Mobile Witness, Inc., allows users to submit text and images directly to public safety personnel, enhancing community vigilance.
As the Super Bowl week unfolds, following these guidelines can help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone in New Orleans.
