Louisiana State Police Reports Four-Vehicle Crash Kills One, Closes I-10 for Several Hours
Published April 23, 2020
From Louisiana State Police – Shortly after 6:45 p.m. on April 22, 2020, Louisiana State Police Troop I (Lafayette Parish) responded to a four-vehicle fatal crash on I-10 East approximately three miles East of Louisiana Avenue. The crash claimed the life of 19-year-old (female) Ryan Alasia Johnson of Kentwood.
The initial investigation by state police revealed there was a 2009 Jaguar XF, being driven by 41-year-old Carol Ann Brooks of Breaux Bridge, stopped due to a flat tire, on the inside eastbound lane of I-10 and inside the construction zone. As eastbound traffic slowed for this stopped vehicle, a 2016 Chevrolet Sonic, being driven by 19-year-old (male) Kendall Raymone Wilkerson, stuck the rear of a 2020 Chevrolet 2500 pickup. After coming to a stop following the initial crash, a fourth vehicle, a 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe, being driven by 34-year-old Felicia Danielle Cormier of Scott, stuck the rear of the Sonic. After impact, the Sonic struck the jersey wall, came to rest on the inside lane, and the Tahoe overturned, blocking the outside lane.
Johnson, who was a rear seat passenger in the Sonic, was restrained but suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene. Several injuries ranging from minor to moderate were reported from other drivers and occupants involved, and some were taken to local hospitals. Blood samples will be submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
Louisiana State Troopers would like to take this opportunity to remind motorists to always make good decisions while operating motor vehicles. Never drive while impaired, fatigued, or distracted, always ensure every occupant is properly restrained, and follow all traffic laws. Taking simple precautions such as these can often mean the difference between life and death.
Troop I has investigated 14 fatal crashes resulting in 16 deaths since the beginning of 2020.
