Louisiana State Police Investigating Trooper Involved Shooting After Suspect Reportedly Accelerated Toward Troopers
Louisiana – Louisiana State Police reported on July 17, 2022, that on July 16, 2022, just before 10:00 p.m., Detectives assigned to the LSP Force Investigation Unit were called to investigate a shooting incident involving a Trooper in New Orleans East.
According to the preliminary investigation, around 9:30 p.m., Troopers conducting proactive patrols in the New Orleans East area received a complaint of reckless driving. When Troopers arrived in the area, they noticed a suspicious vehicle and conducted a traffic stop at the intersection of US Highway 90 (Chef Menteur Highway) and Downman Road. The driver attempted to flee the scene and accelerated in the direction of the Troopers as Troopers approached the vehicle on foot. As a result, a Trooper discharged his service weapon.
The suspect’s vehicle was stopped after fleeing the scene, and the driver was taken into custody without incident. Neither the suspect nor the responding Troopers were injured during the incident.
The Louisiana State Police is leading the investigation, with FIU personnel on the scene. The investigation is still open and ongoing. More information will be made available as it becomes available.
An arrest is an indication that probable cause exists to believe the subject was involved in the offense alleged. A person is innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
