Louisiana State Police Investigating Officer-Involved Shooting After Suspect Allegedly Choked an Officer with His Baton
Alexandria, Louisiana – On Thursday, November 24, 2022, Louisiana State Police reported that at around 1:15 p.m., detectives assigned to the LSP Bureau of Investigations were requested by the Alexandria Police Department to investigate an officer-involved shooting. The shooting involved an Alexandria Police Department officer and 34-year-old Jason Shackleford of Alexandria, Louisiana. Both the Officer and Shackleford were wounded in the encounter.
According to the preliminary investigation, the Alexandria Police Department got a complaint at about 12:30 p.m. of a male running into traffic on Rapides Avenue. As a result of the complaint, Alexandria Police Department responded. When the officer arrived in the area, he made contact with the individual in the 2500 block of Rapides Avenue. Shackleford was later identified as the male subject. Shackleford then engaged in a lengthy physical altercation with the Officer. During the physical altercation, he reportedly took control of the Officer’s baton and allegedly began choking the Officer from behind with it. While being choked, the officer reportedly discharged his firearm and shot Shackleford.
Shackleford was sent to a local hospital for treatment. He is currently listed as stable. The officer was sent to a local hospital for treatment and has since been released.
The Louisiana State Police are leading the investigation into this officer-involved shooting. Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigators processed the incident scene. The investigation is still ongoing, and more material will be disclosed when it is appropriate, in collaboration with the Alexandria Police Department and the Rapides Parish District Attorney’s Office.
